Minstrel Shows Impressions

Well there was no doubt that the nation was for the mostpart, especially in the south racist. While they called it parody in the documentary, I find it to be pure racism.

It's sad to see the defenseless nature of the black community, although they tried to parody white people, they couldn't, and at the same time they were being killed outside the theater. The depiction of the black community in 'coon songs' could very well have been an enforcer of the segregation system.

Then black performers couldn't perform on stage without being in a "racial context". I was confused to see why black performers would wear black-face, like Pigmeat Markham, and the reinforcement of their steriotype and to feel like he lost an edge by removing it was disappointing in how he felt changed by the mask. I feel anyone forcing a change, or influencing a change on a person, that isn't from the heart, and then to have it impact in such a way, is just wrong
